I am Kevin A Venhaus, an American artist based in Iowa whose work explores the collaboration between natural processes and artistic intention. Working primarily with acrylic paint and ink on absorbent canvas and paper, I create paintings that emerge through the interaction of plants, water, pigment, and time. After a career in design and earning a BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute, I returned to painting to develop a process where discovery is as important as intention.

Each painting begins on a wet, absorbent surface where plants gathered from the landscape create the first impressions. Water, gravity, pigment, and time become active participants, allowing each image to emerge through a dialogue between deliberate decisions and the unpredictable behavior of the materials.

Rather than imposing complete control, I establish conditions that encourage movement, interaction, and discovery. As layers of color flow, merge, and settle, I respond to what the painting reveals, preserving moments that could not have been planned. This dialogue between intention and emergence echoes the way natural systems evolve through both order and change.

The resulting works exist between abstraction and representation, suggesting botanical forms, landscapes, and ecological patterns without describing a specific place. I hope these paintings invite viewers to slow down and experience the quiet complexity of a world shaped by both intention and the unexpected.
